Allison Leah – Sunsets

Whoah. Check out the atmosphere of this tune. It’s fragile, glassy, mysterious, dark, glowing, vibey…. the list goes on forever. “Sunsets” defines storytelling in music.

Singer/songwriter Allison Leah is known for building this special kind of emotional atmosphere. What seems to be minimalistic backing turns out to be a perfect canvas for these pristine vocals. And those vocals don’t don’t just throw the story out there, no. Leah knows how to raise awareness of the emotional situation by a soft approach that attracts most by exactly displaying the feeling. There’s heartbreak involved, it’s there for everyone to see and hear, and it’s not just by the vocals. The singer wears her heart and soul open for everyone to see, she points out what exactly it is that hurt her not just with lyrics but through her intonation while singing.

And there you have it. This honesty is rare these days. While we rush through our days, it’s easy to pass by, ignore everyone around us, and we often deliberately ignore the signs way too often. Separation in a relationship or friendship doesn’t happen overnight, it’s a process that happens because one doesn’t put enough care and thought into it. What makes this tune such a diamond is the fact that it speaks the truth so honestly that there are no questions left afterward. It puts the finger on what went wrong, and although the actual situation cannot be changed anymore, the tune acts like a guidance counselor to not make those mistakes again. To heal by acknowledging and accepting the pain, but also by looking forward not back.

What I admire in the songwriting skills of Leah is that many times, there are sad feelings involved but with a special positive twist connected to them. And with this tune it’s no different, as you get lost in the wide reverbed scenery, there’s a special positive vibe woven in, letting you know that it’s okay to feel down, that it’s okay to suffer and grief – and also that you’ll be okay eventually.
