MIK – Lies

With a signature styled melancholy and an unforgiving honesty, the new release of Danish singer/songwriter MIK is the gold standard in transmitting emotions in my opinion. With a quite minimal setting in a very relaxed style, the track has this unique almost draft-ish feel that quickly evolves into the real real without adding tons of elements. You gotta love the tension that is build with what seems to be minimal style elements, like strumming patterns or soft rhythmic components.

Yet all of these components weren’t placed there by coincidence. Not at all. With “Lies” being about toxic relationships, guilt, lack of self love, and victimization, the track only can have a full effect with the soulful vocals happening in this beaten-down dark atmosphere, where it’s time to pour out the truth. And those lush vocals can convince any pair of ears – you are listening to unfiltered emotions and mood, not being sugarcoded by false lyrical claims or a stacked backing.

And it’s this exactly this honesty that I love most about the song of MIK. This tune won’t pretend something that isn’t there, nor was it created to just fill the air with noise for a couple of minutes. It’s rather a melodic advice that will leave you thinking silently. This is sound designed to get under your skin, and it absolutely does.
