Nathaniel Paul – Turpentine

Taken from the Sophomore album “Turpentine” which will be out in summer this year, the new release of singer/songwriter and Jack of all trades Nathaniel Paul hits bullseye multiple times. This tune had not only put the health of the multitalent at risk for shooting the video (kids, don’t try this at home!), it speaks out of the heart and soul of so many of us humans out there. If you ask me, this track is not only a piece of the essence and soul of the artist, but also many of us will recognize a piece of our own soul in it.

Using a laid back groove with a dreamy guitar base, the track tells its story in a very relaxed way. Looking at the overconsumption of news, social media, and the internet at large, for me the track is both criticism of the way things are handled in society nowadays, yet also a certain form of ‘manual’ on how to get off that “assembly line” we’re caught on. Simly put, this gentle eye-opener prevents you from looking the other way.

The tune reminds me to focus, to select and to choose wisely what I do and what I believe, and it does so with this signature styled smooth and lush undertone. If any song out there really can teach us a lesson, it’s “Turpentine”.
