Kelp Monkey and the Buoy Battalion – Better

An irresistible melancholy, reaching for your soul.

In the new release of SF Bay Area based band Kelp Monkey and the Buoy Battalion there’s this irresistible melancholy to find. For some reason this song triggers a really heavy-hearted vibe in me. The melodic concept of the backing feels lost and lonely, spreading kind of a last-man-on-earth-feel all over the place. The additional elements, like the female vocal tracks or the soundscape synths, connect the tune to an intense, almost desperate feeling that is only topped by the emotional vocals.

What makes this track awesome is the partly road-movie, partly dramatic vibe in there. The listener is placed in a complete surrounding that tells its honest story, progressing from calm and lost to a more uplifting side of the tune over time. If you let it, the sound makes you self-reflect, digging for everything deep down in your soul that isn’t part of your everyday happiness routine. I said it before, I’ll say it again, it is plain awesome when music is reaching for your soul, not only delivering the notes but triggering thoughts, feelings and moodsets. And ‘Better’ does exactly that.
