Grace Davies – Amsterdam

From vulnerable to confident, this tune contains everything in between.

The new release of singer/songwriter Grace Davies feels incredible vulnerable at first. Backed by a defensive piano and stringy synths which create a wide, reverbed atmosphere, the beautiful crystalline vocals instantly inject a huge amount of feeling in there. Because this ballad takes its time to deliver the message, the emotional impact on the listener is even greater.

While the track progresses, theres a slight rise in tension going on. Several additional backing tracks are introduced over time, making the track feel more confident and not so hurt anymore. I love the fact that the moodset of the whole tune is changing over the tracks’ total running time. What really feels lost and heartbroken at the beginning is being transformed into an almost uplifting tune that tells the listener ‘you know what? It’s going to be okay. Lessons learned. That’s what being human is all about.’ All of it while still keeping the general melodic moody base. And this versatility is why ‘Amsterdam’ is such a great song.
