goodkitty – Holding On To You

There it is again. That signature-styled element, attached to the works of goodkitty. It’s kind of hard to explain, but I’ll try it anyway.

Did you ever visit a place you haven’t been for years, maybe for decades? Once returning there, you’ll probably remember some things, while the place for sure feels detached and somewhat strange although it might as well have been your home for years. It’s this honest nostalgic vibe that is to find in the tunes of singer/songwriter Katie Colt, better known as goodkitty. It’s not pure nostalgia though, it’s way more. It’s accessible music blended with wisdom, a truthful core, melancholy, bittersweet memories, and this non-fakeable emotional connection to every tune she creates.

With her latest release “Holding On To You”, it’s no different. Soft synth textures create a retro-flavored atmosphere that seems to be filled with clouds and warm air. The vocals are not an intruder to this scenery, they are more like the missing ingredient to make the scene come to life. Being an ode to platonic love and the ways we hold each other and are held in return, the song’s relaxed nature feels like a not-so-platonic love letter to life, friendship, and relationships in general. And it’s exactly this topic-flattering vibe that I love about this track. Everything seems familiar, laid-back, and enriched with a soft evocative groove. In other words: synthpop at its finest.
