MXMS – What’s My Name

To anyone who thinks that words cannot be used as a weapon, this one’s for you. Be aware: words can hurt. And they will hurt.

Handling quite a heavy topic, the new track of MXMS creates a very vulnerable environment for the listener. Backed only by a reverbed piano first, the atmosphere is as crystalline and fragile as it gets. And this atmosphere, along the awesome but sometimes very disturbing video reflects the songs topic perfectly.

Anyone with even an ounce of empathy will agree that this track makes you wait for the moment to rise and scream. With all what is showed to the listener just by the sound and the video, this gets you both sad and mad. It’s rare songs like “What’s My Name” that show you how people really feel. I’m certain that the song is not just played by the guys of MXMS, it’s rather a page of their past diaries. There’s an unbelievable amount of emotion and passion happening, making the song both a thing of beauty AND a real uncomfortable scenario, because now you’re caught as a silent witness, and lets be honest for a sec – we all have been there in our lives.

This track made me feel what it’s like on both ends, and that is the true art here. Along very thoughtful arrangements, both in the song and the video, there’s enough accusation placed to make all listeners out there think. But it’s not done in a desperate way, for me it’s more like a wake-up call. This song shows you why it is so important to choose wisely what kind of human you wanna be.
