Vanessa Wagner – Etude N°16 – Philip Glass

I learned one thing about pianist Vanessa Wagner while listening to the her new release – she’s a musician that goes all in whenever she plays. When playing, she creates a certain ‘movement’ with the sound. To paint a picture, it feels a bit like standing at the beach, while the little waves are hitting the shore. The movement of the ocean keeps the environment in constant motion, the wind and the water create tension and energy, and there’s this interaction happening that can only be caused by life.

And that’s what fascinates me with this special interpretation. It’s done with a unique amount of life happening. There’s a soft tenderness present, interacting with an almost desperate tension, conneccted to an all-seeing wisdom. There’s emotion, energy and expression blended in a way that’s really capturing. Yet it won’t drag you along, the sound rather invites you to participate on a journey meant to experience the tune (and in a way, the world) through the eyes and ears of Wagner. It’s amazing when an artist is able to show you the connection present between musician and theme. Not even closely being able to play and instrument as skilled as Vanessa Wagner, I find myself closing my eyes to this tune, allowing it to enchant me, and to take me to a place I haven’t seen and experienced before.

That, guys, is what it’s about in music.
