Asterous – Listen

Canadian duo Asterous is working some new magic with their new release called “Listen”. Remember those dark, melancho-gritty vibes we were offered with tracks like “Mercenary“, or the intense emotional introvert feel we were granted with “Apprentice“? With the new release, Asterous just turned around the ship, steering in a whole new direction for a change. And I absolutely love it.

This time it’s getting melancho-funky, folks! What does start kind of dark for the first seconds feels like stepping out of the darkness into a bright energetic atmosphere. Supported by funky guitars, the harmonized vocals have an unusual feel attached. Don and Rummy managed to keep their signature mysterious dark Asterous ingredient but blend it into a soft and flowing scenario. With additional components (is that a telephone ringing somewhere in the back?) along smooth melodic transitions, the track for me has a certain Mike Oldfield-ish texture, but is upgraded with this special Asterous ingredient I was talking about. (Damn. We need a name for this component. Like one of these rare medieval potions. How about… asteruo obscurus? Sounds about right.)

I love it when artists don’t confine themselves to a certain genre. And I love it even more when they manage to take their signature sound along their journey through genres. And that’s exactly what happened here. You never know what they will create next, but you always can be sure they will be recognizable with that special amount of asteruo obscurus.
