Sugar Relics – Can’t Stay Awake

There is an undeniable tension and energy present in the new release of American pop duo Sugar Relics. But it’s not the obvious, pressurized brute kind of energy, on the contrary. “Can’t Stay Awake” even uses playful arpeggios and a fresh rhythm along what I can only describe as “misty” percussion, where the atmosphere feels as if the emotions are falling from the ceiling like drops of water in a subterrain cave. This dark tension is different from what you know. With fragile vocals that switch seamlessly between vulnerable and confident, between pleading and demanding, between submissive and dominant, the track changes its texture several times during the total running time.

And it’s these transistions that I love most about this track. The track feels like you’re walking through the subconscious of a torn human. Not really bound to a single state of mind, the vibe of the tune has a certain range, yet is sculpted in a unique manner, exploiting every inch of this dark, haunting region. The best part is that you can feel the whole palette of feelings present in said haunting region.

Being part of an upcoming album, this tune really poked my interest. With an intense emotional output like this, I can only imagine the intense world of sound and vibe that is going to be offered in the album. My guess is that we haven’t seen nor heard anything from Sugar Relics yet. The best is yet to come with every new track.
