Samuel Cohen – Pawns

I can honestly say that I haven’t heard such an interesting mix of styles, genres and techniques in a long time. Some might actually say something starting with ‘what the heck…’, and you know what? THAT’S exactly why I love this tune of multitalent Samuel Cohen.

There’s this medieval flavor present in the melodic progression of ‘Pawns’, and it’s presented in such an unusual fashion that it didn’t raise one but both my eyebrows. There are electric guitars present in the mix, shouts, synths, electro-processed vocals (!) – long story short, it feels as if there was this box in the studio of Cohen that had a big ‘DO NOT MIX’ sign on it, and I can almost see Cohen standing there with a smile on his face, thinking ‘who’s going to stop me, box? YOU?’ It’s an unusual move to actually merge those different blends from different genres together, but somehow (I’m really not sure HOW) it worked perfectly. Out came a catchy tune with a sing-along melody that even my eight year old remembered after hearing the tune just twice (although when she’s singing ‘we are the pawns’, it sounds like ‘we owe the buns’.) . See what happened here? This tune might have an unusual approach, but I love the signature style. And it immediately sticks.
