Quick Shots #5: Couchsleepers

/ When and where was the last time you performed live on stage with this Covid mess going on out there?
/ Couchsleepers:
We were right in the middle of our album release tour when concerns about covid-19 pushed us to make a difficult decision and abbreviate the tour – it was a truly wonderful set of shows, though, beginning with an amazing festival at Vassar College in upstate NY and coming to an untimely stop just after our stop in New Haven CT. We’re all eager to step back on stage, as soon as that’s safe and practical. There’s something magical that happens between you and an audience when you’re sharing an experience in the same room that we haven’t been able to duplicate despite all the most creative solutions to this time of physical separation and distance.

/ Who are your favourite musicians you listen to?
/ Couchsleepers:
Some artists that have been influential or recently captivating: Phoebe Bridgers’ Punisher displays some wonderfully subtle lyrical juxtaposition and amazing production; the earnest literary songwriting of our friend Jasper Sloan Yip; Pinegrove continues to display admirable emotional athleticism and powerful songwriting; the superbly creative, aggressively bassy production on Billie Eilish’s work; Madison Cunningham’s tightly choreographed Who Are You Now travels so naturally from beautiful ballads to funky grooves on a dime. And of course the music of my incredibly talented brother (bedroom soul artist and producer Public Library Commute) and sister (singer-songwriter Emily Mae) is constantly in rotation. That’s a very non-exhaustive list!

/ What does the rest of the year hold for you guys? Any projects coming up?
/ Couchsleepers:
I can’t give many details yet, but it’s been a very exciting six months or so for us. We spent some time at a rennovated farmhouse in the Vermont countryside set up as a studio, had a somewhat elaborate photography shoot in my apartment, we’ve been collaborating with artists and writers and poets we love from around the world, and we’ll be gallavanting around shooting some videos in the coming months… so stay tuned. There is much in store.
