Wild Manes – Cicadas

Vocal groove? Can do, ladies and gentlemen.

The base concept of the lastest release of the Brooklyn based band Wild Manes has a very basic yet intriguing aspect. The beat feels steady and driving, while the jumpy bass line injects a somewhat retro feel. And then there are those vocals. Those beautiful, soft, lush and emotional vocals. Along the minimal backing, they fill the track with human warmth, with playful melodies and a ton of groove and swing. Plus this ever-present vintage vibe.

I think what attracts me most in ‘Cicadas’ is the effective simplicity of the whole concept. The tracks are really kept in the necessary range regarding backing, while the vocals tracks are blended together in a way that there’s excitement and playfulness to find in there while the track is somewhat evolving (aka never being linear aka not ever being boring). With all those harmonic playful vocal elements, the track has the charme of a session track while shining bright like a well-polished studio track at the same time.
