The Thing With Feathers – What You Want

The new release of The Thing With Feathers feels like an old friend you haven’t seen in ages.

Somehow the track transmits a certain retro vibe at first, but once the track progresses it lifts off with more energy and drive. I love the fact that this track isn’t just confined to one moodset and one genre but blends different sceneries into one awesome track. The vocals feel emotional and honest throughout the song, with adding tension and thrust during the second half of the song – but feeling soft and warm during the intro part. The guitar and synth tracks are building a very soft wide-spaced atmosphere which gives the tune a very… lets call it ‘floaty glow’.

The progression of the tune can be described with walking through a house you’ve never been before. The sound has several stages, as if you were passing through several rooms. It also contains several well-known elements as well as unexpected moves that create excitement and passion music-wise. The mix is well-rounded, giving the track a very dreamy yet down-to-earth feel. (And believe me, mixing both the soft and the energetic parts into one base set with all of the instruments and effects isn’t done in a minute or two.) Long story short: ‘What You Want’ holds an awesome amount of known and unknown, present and past, melody and drive. You gotta love the diversity you’ll find in there.
