Time for groove with a twist.
With that awesome guitar lick, the song builds up an irresistible groove to swing along to. The defensive yet steady beat and percussion combination additionally backs this vibe, ultimately the sound feels like you’re walking down a lonely street at night, alone with your thoughts. And then the vocals kick in. Soft and warm, with a boyish charme yet a distinct approach, those vocals tell the story in a mighty groovy way, and as the song progresses, they even spice up things with a rap element in between those awesome instrumental interludes.
The song really is full of surprises for me. There are several ‘chapters’ merged together that fit the base theme perfectly, and there’s not really a linear passage to find in there. ‘Whatever It Is’ feels like the logical next step in alt rock evolution. The classic, almost ‘retro’ elements are blended with some nowadays’ surprises, making the track playing on repeat in your head long after you heard it.
