Katie Gately – Waltz

Creating a dark-ish, mysterious atmosphere, the new release of Katie Gately knows how to enchant the listener.

Using a pulsating bass synth along a unique percussion which can be described best as ‘rusty’, the stage is set for the melodic and almost chanting vocals. For me, it feels like listening to some sort of witchcraft happening here, the slow methodical and hypnotic voices merge with singing female backings and chopped vocals into sort of a mysterious dance that puts a spell on you.

I love the fact that there is so much happening in there that your mind isn’t able to grab all of it. You feel like you have to groove along to the rhythmical and monotone ‘marching’ drum while your mind falls deeper into the world of the american multitalent Gately. At parts this feels like therapy when at other parts it feels discomforting because the music pushes you deeper into the rabbit hole without asking you. You cannot resist these vocals from the shadows. It’s plain awesome to get lost in the void because the music guides you there. ‘Waltz’ feels like nothing in there is coincidence but masterfully constructed to guide the listeners fate.
