Armstrong – You & Me

What we find isn’t always what we were searching for in the first place. The newest release of Armstrong takes a different and refreshing musical approach on relationships.

Melodic and emotional, yet with an awesome portion of energy, “You & Me” tells a story about high expectations, harsh realities and anything in between that is the ups and downs of a relationship. What drives the song forward is this awesome electric guitar that makes the song pick up pace and tension just at the right spots. The crystalline and soft vocals of Nyssa Garcia change seamlessly between emotional, hurt, accusing and confident without ever switching to one side completely. It’s these little nuances that make the vocals so addictive. Backed by a defensive piano, synth and beat combination, the singer creates an atmosphere that seems fragile and vulnerable at first, but as soon as the guitar adds the tension, the atmosphere changes to confident, self-aware.

I love when music tells the story this way. Imagine there were no lyrics in this song – you would still be able to feel the intentions. The track shifts from ‘down on the ground’ to ‘uplifting’ within seconds. In “You & Me” everything just falls in place. The vocals blend in perfectly with the handmade music, which itself blends perfectly with the electro elements in there. There’s elements of a ballad as well as of alternative rock scratching hard rock/nu metal in the process. You gotta love the versatility here. Plus the mix is a thing of beauty, and so is the video coming along with the tune. This track crosses genre boundaries in many ways. Looking to some other works of Armstrong, such as “Cycles” for example, it’s clear that this track is a shot from the softer side of the band, and it’s an awesome one in my opinion. It feels really honest, kinda like a “who says we shouldn’t try this” statement. There aren’t many bands nor artists out there who are able to switch gears in this fashion.
